Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery for Upper GI Cancer
Beaumont RCSI Cancer Centre is a leading centre in the delivery of minimally invasive surgical approaches to both total gastrectomy (removal of all of the stomach) and subtotal gastrectomy (preservation of a portion of the stomach).
Our surgeons perform the majority surgery for stomach cancers by keyhole surgery meaning our patients have a more rapid recovery and get home sooner. Occasionally there are reasons to consider the older “open” surgical techniques but this is increasingly uncommon.
Keyhole surgery avoids the need for your surgeon to perform “open” surgery through large incisions. Instead the operations are performed using a series of 5 to 10mm incisions with images projected onto a screen and your surgeon operates with fine instruments placed through a series of small incisions.
Robotic Surgery for Upper GI Cancers: Beaumont RCSI Cancer Centre is the only hospital in Ireland to offer robotic surgery for the removal of stomach cancers.
Robotic surgery has many advantages including greater dexterity of dissection and precision of surgery due to a static and magnified view given to your surgeon. It applies the latest technology to keyhole surgery and allows your surgeon to perform your operation with more accuracy than traditional keyhole surgery.

Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Programme
Getting you back home sooner and back to your normal life faster.
At Beaumont RCSI Cancer Centre we believe in preparing our patient well for surgery so that they are as fit and as possible. We are fortunate to have a dedicated ERAS Nurse, Claire Coleman, who helps patients get ready for their time in hospital and sets goals with them for their time in hospital. In particular we set defined mobility goals with all of our patients to get them up and moving rapidly after surgery.
Our ERAS programme aims to reduce complications from surgery and hasten recovery – meaning you get home more quickly.

Dietician Assessment
Dietary assessment and dietary supplementation is vital for patients with cancers of the stomach or oesophagus. We are exceptionally lucky to have 2 dedicated senior dieticians who bring a wealth of experience to the nutritional management of all of our cancer patients.
Cathy O’Neill and Linda Moore will be with you throughout your treatment pathway ensuring that your dietary intake is optimised both before treatment and into recovery.
