Palliative Care

Palliative CareIntroduction

Palliative care is an approach which aims to improve the quality of life of people facing the problems associated with life-limiting illness and supports their families.

In Beaumont RCSI Cancer Centre the Specialist Palliative Care Team is a consult/advisory service which means they work with a patient’s hospital consultant and team to provide an extra layer of support in caring for patients in the hospital.

Our team includes Doctors, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Medical Social Worker and Administrative support.

Referral to the Specialist Palliative Care Team is made by the patient’s hospital consultant who is responsible for the patient’s care.

Reasons for referral include:

  • Pain and symptom control
  • Psychological, social or spiritual distress
  • End of life care
  • Future care planning
  • How do I access Palliative Care services for myself or my family?

If you, or your relative, are at home or in a nursing home, talk to your GP about a referral to your local Community Palliative Care Team. If you, or your relative, are in hospital, talk to the team looking after you about a referral to the Specialist Palliative Care Team.

  • What is Community Palliative Care?

Community Palliative Care provides advice and support for people and their families, living at home with life-limiting illness. The service visits you at home providing advice about pain and symptom control, psychological and social support. The team liaises with your GP and other community support services, as an extra layer of support, to promote your quality of life at home. You GP remains your primary carer in the community.
